The African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) has just held the biggest cancer conference ever held in Africa in Cape Town South Africa . We had over 400 delegates representing 42 African countries, as well as speakers and delegates from USA , UK , Europe and one person from Russia . At the conference, we were proud to announce the election of our new President, Dr Twalib Ngoma. Dr Ngoma is a Radiation Oncologist and is the Executive Director of the Ocean Road Cancer Institute of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania .
Dr Ngoma, graduated as an MD in 1978 and thereafter underwent extensive training in the United Kingdom , Germany and the USA in Radiation Oncology and is considered one of Africa 's foremost specialists in Radiation Oncology. Among many appointments, Dr Ngoma is the head of the office of International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) and is involved in numerous collaborative research projects with INCTR and the World Health Organisation. In addition Dr Ngoma is the Tanzanian Team Leader for Palliative care for Cancer and HIV/AIDs patients and the Programme Manager for National Cancer Control Programme in Tanzania since 1997. Dr Ngoma is also the programme manager for the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT) Tanzanian Demonstration Project.
Dr Ngoma has published numerous articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and books and presented at many international conferences worldwide.
The AORTIC Council and the membership of AORTIC are extremely proud to welcome Dr Ngoma as our President. We are confident that under his guidance, AORTIC will achieve its objectives to make Cancer in Africa an important health problem and to draw the attention of the authorities and decision makers to the necessity of putting Cancer firmly on the health agenda of African countries. Dr Ngoma will lead AORTIC to find African solutions to African problems.
